EVP (or Electronic Voice Phenomena) is an integral part of paranormal investigating.  There a feeling of excitement one gets when reviewing audio recordings, and an unexplainable voice is heard that investigators did not hear while investigating.  While some are a whisper, and others much louder, they all basically say, “We are not alone."

Some skeptics may scoff at the idea of an EVP actually being a spirit trying to communicate with the living.  Some will say it is a radio transmission being picked up, or just background noise.  I would tend to disagree.  Some EVPs captured are not just meaningless words, but direct answers to questions.

While the frequency spectrum of the human voice is well known, the frequency spectrum of EVPs or spirit voices are not.  Through our research, we have been able to study the frequency spectrum of the EVPs that we have recorded. There is a significant difference between the human and EVP frequency spectrums.  While the human voice is generally dominated with acoustic energy at lower frequencies,  EVPs tend to be dominated with acoustic energy in higher frequency bands.   Because the spectrums are so different, we are able to distinguish and separate a human voice from an EVP.

From this research, we have taken this process to the next level: if these voices, or EVPs are heard in specific frequency bands, why not match the spectrum of the questions posed to possible entities?  In other words, let’s try and communicate on their level, and not just ours.  If you are trying to tune in a radio to a specific station, you have to know the broadcast frequency of the station first.  If we can’t hear these EVPs because they are at too high a frequency for the human ear to detect, maybe it is the same for the entities we are trying to make contact with.

Another question we asked is, does a human presence intimidate an entity?  Will an entity be more willing to communicate without a human presence in the room?  We felt that we were now on to something.  So we combined these two theories, and thus the EVP Experiment was born.

Our question:  Will a spirit or entity be more willing and able to communicate with an electronic device that is broadcasting EVP questions with a similar frequency spectrum as the EVP itself, while adding in the variable of no human presence in the room?

First a recording of EVP questions had to be made.  A one-hour session of a steady stream of EVP questions, with a space between the questions was recorded.  Once a haunted location was obtained, the broadcasting device was set up with a digital recorder, to record possible responses to the broadcasted questions.  The room was vacated, and investigation of the property was continued in different areas of the location.

When the session was over, a live EVP session was conducted in the same room with investigators present, and the broadcasting device was taken out of the room.

The results

We were very excited to find EVP answers to some of the questions that had been broadcast into the empty room.  There were also EVP answers to some questions asked by the investigators.  We plan to continue using this technique in future cases, and try to perfect it.  So far the results are promising; only further research on this idea will prove if this is a more effective way to capture EVPs than the traditional investigator asking the questions.
